Colour Crates - celebrating the theatrical heritage of Eldon Street, Barnsley

Colour Crates is a temporary installation in Barnsley town centre designed to inject colour and intrigue during a time of transition for the South Yorkshire town, whilst celebrating the rich heritage of the area in and around Eldon Street. The aesthetic of the work is informed by traditional storage / shipping crates, with hand rolled stencilled text highlighting the names of performers and artists who visited the town. The use of our signature ‘Colour Pop’ colours gives the work a contemporary edge.

Eldon Street has such an interesting and surprising history of Theatre and Circus and we were keen to bring an air of this back with the installation. The wooden packaging crates have been painted in fun and playful colours, and have the names of characters that performed in the Public Hall, including George Dinnie, ’The World's Strongest Man’ alongside acts from the Charles Adam Circus, stencilled on them.

We hope our temporary crates installation will spark interest and intrigue in Eldon Street's history as well as create an alternative colourful seating area, whilst the Town Centre building work continues.

If the installation day is anything to go by, passersby certainly like the way the bold coloured crates brightened the area up and were intrigued to hear about the performers of times gone by.
