Tapestries - Dewsbury

Tapestries is a colourful celebration of Dewsbury Town Centre, specifically the people, architecture and the built environment. We worked with people who shop, work and socialise in Dewsbury town centre to capture a series of photographic portraits which became central to the designs as the work developed.

Many of the shapes, textures and patterns that are used in the three image panels were collected from across the town. Colours were sampled from clothing, fabrics, foods and textures also found in the town. We wove together colours, textures and portraits in the creation of a work thats full of vibrancy, fun and optimism for the future of the town.

The patterns and floral images developed through the process of making the work, and seem a fitting representation of growth, hope and possibility as new seeds are shared are planted.

The digital collages were developed from of a collection of commissioned photographs taken Timm Cleasby and Yvonne Roberts of residents, business owners, and textural studies from the locality. The photographs have been woven together to create three works that represent the rich tapestry of stories, people and architecture that make up the Town Centre.

Tapestries has been sited on the Connect Housing building on Bond Street, and is a bright and uplifting beacon that marks the start to the development work that is planned for this area of the Town Centre.

We were happy to support mentee artist Lisa Knight during Tapestries.

This project was commissioned by BEAM and Dewsbury Creative Town.
